Luxury Train Journeys in Europe: Five Routes Worth It

Luxury Train Journeys in Europe: Five Routes Worth It

A great train trip is a hotel that moves. These five European routes earn their fares, and each has a cabin choice that is a waste of money.

Why trains beat flights on these routes

On the right route a train is not just transport. It is a night in a moving room, a meal with a view, and an arrival in the city center rather than an airport an hour out. Add up a flight, a transfer and a hotel night, and the train often comes out ahead.

The catch is that good sleeper trains sell out. In summer, popular cabins go months in advance, and the remaining berths are the ones nobody wanted. Book early and choose your route before your dates.

The five routes we rate

  • An overnight across the Alps, mixing mountain scenery with a proper dining car.
  • A classic north-to-south sleeper that links two great cities in a single night.
  • A slow daytime scenic line where the windows matter more than the speed.
  • A night train along a coast, waking to the sea outside your cabin.
  • A short luxury hop that trades distance for service and a fine dinner.

Which cabin to book

A private cabin with a bed and a door is worth the money for two people sharing; you split the cost and keep the quiet. Travelling solo, a couchette in a shared compartment is far cheaper and usually comfortable, as long as you sleep through background noise.

Shower suites exist and are pleasant, but they cost more than a good hotel for one night. Unless the shower is the point of the trip, put that money into a better dinner and a wider bed instead.

Book the bed, not the shower. Nobody remembers the shower.

Eating and sleeping on board

On the classic routes, dinner in the dining car is part of the experience and sometimes part of the fare. Reserve a sitting when you book, and choose the later one if you want the scenery at dusk. Breakfast is often simple but welcome before arrival.

Sleep is easier than you expect if you book a lower berth and bring earplugs. The motion helps; the announcements do not. A small eye mask covers the cabin lights that stay on through the night.

What it really costs

Fares vary hugely by route, season and cabin. As a rule, a private cabin for two costs about what a decent hotel plus two flights would, which is the fair comparison. A couchette can undercut a budget flight once you count the saved hotel night.

Look for rail passes only if you plan several journeys. For a single overnight, a point-to-point ticket usually wins. For a longer trip, see our travel insurance guide before you lock in non-refundable fares, or browse Luxury Travel.

Eurail and the national rail operators publish route maps and booking windows that are worth reading before you commit to a cabin class.
