Thailand Island Beach Towns: Where to Stay and Swim

Thailand Island Beach Towns: Where to Stay and Swim

Thailand has hundreds of beaches and a handful of great towns. This guide separates the two so you sleep well and swim better.

Two coasts, two seasons

Thailand has two main beach coasts, and they do not share a monsoon. The Andaman coast, around Phuket and Krabi, is dry from November to April. The Gulf, around Koh Samui and Koh Tao, is driest from January to September. Travel in the wrong window and you pay for calm water you will not get.

This is the single most useful fact in Thai travel. Choose your coast by the month, not the other way around, and the trip mostly plans itself.

Which islands suit whom

Phuket is the most developed and the easiest for a first visit, with an international airport and every comfort. Krabi and its nearby islands are smaller and prettier. Koh Lanta is flat and slow, which families love, while Koh Tao trades beaches for world-class diving.

In the Gulf, Koh Samui is the busy adult island, Koh Phangan is the party island, and Koh Chang stays quieter with a national park. Match the island to your energy rather than your Instagram feed.

Reading a beach before you book

Two things decide whether a beach is swimmable: which side of the island it faces, and whether a reef or headland blocks the swell. West-facing beaches catch sunsets and, in the wrong season, rough water. A beach sheltered by a headland can stay calm while the next bay is unswimmable.

Ask the guesthouse which bay is calm this week. Locals know the water better than any app.

Getting between the islands

Ferries and speedboats link the main islands, but they cancel when the sea is rough. Never book a same-day ferry and flight without a wide margin. If a connection matters, take a flight from a larger hub, or allow an extra night.

Buy ferry tickets at the pier or through your hotel rather than from touts on the street. The difference in price is small, and the difference in reliability is not.

Eating and staying well

Street food on the islands is excellent and cheap, and busy stalls are the safe bet. Seafood is fresh and best grilled simply. If you have a sensitive stomach, ease in over the first two days rather than diving straight into the spiciest dishes.

Bungalows range from basic fan rooms to polished resorts. For long stays, check whether the room has real air conditioning and whether the beach has shade at midday; both decide how comfortable a week becomes.

When to go and what to avoid

The best months differ by coast, so plan around the dry season for the island you choose. Avoid the busiest weeks of the year unless you enjoy crowds, and be wary of packages that look too cheap; they often hide poor transport and long transfers.
